The family wagon started spewing constant black smoke and saying check emissions. I think it's the exhaust gas recirculation valve, can any of you guys weigh in?

That seems like a logical guess.

Soot build up in EGR valve???

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Would be strange if that's the case though, it recently got a new egr.

Probably wouldn't hurt to check the O2 sensors as well if the egr is new. Have you seen a rise in fuel consumption?

Hm, that is interesting. IDK what the problem could be then... does it have a catalytic converter?

Dont know if the fuel consumption has worsened I'll check the trip computer when they bring the car back, I think theyre having it towed. What would you do to check the o2 sensor? I've never diagnosed one before.

I believe so.

Any chance you have a code scanner to see if it's throwing a code? Also how does it sound?
![]() 08/30/2014 at 09:56 |

Scanner should give you the error code that's being thrown, from there you can match the code to the part that is at fault.

I'll take it to get scanned then, I know a guy who reads codes pretty cheaply.

I'll probably take it to get the codes read. I havent seen the car in person yet, according to my mam it was running smoothly other than the smoke.

Any auto zone or pepboys like place will read the codes for free, but then you'd have to Google the error codes.

We don't have those shops in the UK and the going rate for a code read is about $40, this mechanic does them for less than $10.

Ah okay, fair enough. Normally emissions faults can be due to bad O2 sensor.

if its spewing BLACK and saying check emissions, I don't think its the EGR valve. a more likely culprit is the DPF (diesel particulate filter) could have broken/gone bad/worn out.

We actually fixed it between me posting and your comment. We cleaned the EGR and it's running great again.

intresting. We have an egr valve on my dads tdi a3 tht went bad, but nvr smoked...just gave us acheck engine light

I imagine it depends on which position the valve sticks in. I think the smoke was because it stuck in a place that made the car run rich.
